saying goodbye

the other swedish boat ariel iv is leaving on their way to anchorage in alaska
and you can also see the polish boat solanus on their way to vancouver and then later on cape horn
and which i first saw from the chopper same day i arrived in greenland
we have been like a family sailing quite close together in this dangerous place

and i'm saying goodbye to anna who will stay in canada for the winter

cambridge bay

dear friends
this is the final stop of this beautiful but cold sailing tour
i just booked a very expensive flight back and i will be in copenhagen on the 1st of september if everything works out fine
a little earlier than expected but we sailed really fast
i will soon update with a video from this whole adventure
and i hope i see you soon

crowded

4 sailing boats mooring in gjöa havn and 2 passenger ships
one of them M/S BREMEN!!!
gjöa was amundsens boat when he first sailed through the NW passage
and gjöa is the first real city we enter in canada
and where we first meet some canadian inuits after more then one week sailing

Monday 23 August 2010

false bay

2 swedish sailing boats in the same bay
something is probably false here
and once more in the morning there comes a large passenger cruising ship into this bay

Friday 20 August 2010

polar bear

i have a new dangerous friend

Monday 16 August 2010

dundas harbour

our first stop in canada
when we woke up in this morning there was a large passenger icebreaker in this place far from nothing
and 55 tourists invaded the land
and we thought we would be alone

Sunday 15 August 2010

canada

first view of canada

Wednesday 11 August 2010

last night in greenland

we found one last beautiful place were we could get some sleep before our crossing
but when walking around on land i found this human scull
strange

leaving greenland

today we will leave greenland going towards the northwest passage in canada
probably it will take a while for the next internet connection
so don't worry if i don't update this blog in a while
cu on the other side

tsunamis

icebergs can be dangerous in many different ways
when gigantic icebergs are calving there will be a tsunami and a warning over radio
and my skipper told me if we are close to a huge iceberg calving i should run fast into the boat and close the hatch and hold on

Monday 9 August 2010

nature

not so many trees on greenland

icebergs

some more icebergs

Friday 6 August 2010

upernavik

arriving in upernavik
this is probably our last harbour in greenland
we will wait for our new satellite phone here and then wait for good weather and the right ice conditions before we will cross to canada

Thursday 5 August 2010

night watch

sunrise under my watch

Wednesday 28 July 2010

disko

ilulissat and the ice fjord in the disko bay
this is a unesco world heritage site
and it's probably one of the most beautiful places on earth
but also to many tourists here
and yes we did dance a little
we are also checking the ice charts and waiting for the passage in canada to clear from ice before we will cross

Sunday 25 July 2010

aasiaat again

we stayed in aasiaat for one week helping our french flamenco friend with his engine problems
here he's playing digerido on som engine parts

Tuesday 20 July 2010

aasiaat

we were invited to an inuit who served whale meat for breakfast
here they can haunt whale but they are not allowed to sell it on the international market
they just hunt for their own needs which might be a little better than the whale industry
still it's a little strange for me to see

and the frenchmen on the left wanted to go along hunting but because he might be greenpeace they did not want him along for the slaughter

and a nice friendly greenlandish flag

and the harpoon they kill whales with on the same boat

Monday 19 July 2010

sisimiut

arriving in sisimiut at 2.am

a lot of headwind so we taking it slow with help of the motor
waiting for more southerly winds
here not far from sisimiut
and by the way
we are now in the arctic

hello there

oh so cute

Thursday 15 July 2010

natural harbour

looking for anchorage in a bay one very calm night
the tide is changing the water level with more than 4 meters so there can be some big surprises when you wake up in the morning

Tuesday 13 July 2010

view

nice view heading away from nuuk somewhere behind the mountains

Saturday 10 July 2010

nuuk

capital of greenland
we meet our polish friends again and a canadian boat from quebeq and a frenchmen from nice who is sailing alone
and we we can finally eat som real pizza

Friday 9 July 2010

sunset

sunset close to midnight
and fog banks on the right

shades of grey

it has not really been a clear sky for a few days
but grey can also be a beautiful colour and sometimes you can almost see the sun coming through
